Qualifying work includes the removal of vegetation to bring an eligible property into compliance with the vegetation standards for the City and MOFD, excluding routine or ongoing maintenance (e.g., cutting down dry grasses). Qualifying work includes:

• Total removal of Eucalyptus and/or Monterey Pine trees from the property;
• Total removal of dead or dying trees;
• Remove ladder fuels (shrubs and bushes), creating 6-foot gap between the lower tree canopy and the ground;
• Removal of vegetation in Zone 0 - Zone 2  (immediate to extended zones);
• Removal of Juniper and Bamboo; and/or
• Removal of hazardous vegetation or combustible material to a minimum height of 15 feet within 3 feet of a fire apparatus road measured from back of curb or edge of pavement. 

Measure R Chipping Services

in partnership with Moraga Orinda Fire District (MOFD)

The City of Orinda is offering a no-cost year-round community wood chipping program to assist residents in reducing vegetation and fire fuels by facilitating the chipping of material produced in quantities too large for green bins and too small for commercial chipping providers.

It's a free, non-enforcement related, home assessment from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District's Volunteer Community Wildfire Safety Ambassadors.

MOFD annually trains volunteers to help neighbors learn how to prepare their homes for wildfire by reviewing the annual MOFD Exterior Wildfire Hazard Abatement Requirements. These free home assessments are non-enforcement related; volunteer Ambassadors do NOT share their observations with the MOFD staff.

What to expect:
- The assessment is free and usually takes about 45 minutes to complete depending on questions you may have.
- The ambassadors will not need to go inside your home or into your backyard.
- The ambassadors have been trained to point out things that homeowners might have overlooked while preparing for the upcoming wildfire season.
- The ambassadors will leave you with an Abatement Flyer with a section for you to keep notes that will help you keep your property safer from wildfire and compliant with the MOFD Fire Code.
- The ambassadors can only assess the property identified in this request that you occupy. We are happy to assess groups of homes but each resident must fill out their own assessment request form. Please talk with your neighbors and encourage them to request an assessment too!
- An ambassador will contact you (either by phone or email) to set up an appointment for your assessment.

1. Properties must be located within the boundaries of the Moraga Orinda Fire Protection District (MOFD)

2. There must be a minimum of five participating residential properties

3. Grant recipients must pledge to maintain the properties five years

*Round 1 funding requests are currently paused (effective 1/31/25). You are welcome to submit an application request, however, it will not be reviewed until the next round of funding begins.

The purpose of the Moraga-Orinda Firewise Network (MOFN) is to help residents, who live within the boundaries of the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District (MOFD), prepare for wildfire via education and outreach.

Program Overview

Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) offers rebates to customers for replacing their lawn with water-wise landscaping. Front yards and back yards are eligible for conversion.

Rebate Amount

• The rebate is $1 per square foot of lawn replaced up to the maximum amount.
• The maximum rebate for single-family residential sites is $2,000
• The maximum rebate for commercial, multi-family, and municipal accounts is $20,000 per site. Learn about the nonfunctional turf irrigation ban.

When evacuations are ordered...

• Take only one vehicle.
• Leave room on the road for emergency vehicles. -Fire engines, ambulances, and police cruisers

The CERT program offers valuable insight into the first few critical hours following an emergency related event and how individuals can become empowered to better prepare to sustain themselves, their families and their communities.

When emergencies happen, Lamorinda CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of their communities.
